Shane and Dorcas
May 15th, 2008 by Benji Mast
A lovely couple, a cousin and future cousin.
I used a flash on the following picture to add a back light. It’s supposed to look something like the evening sun… Whaddya think?
Ok so it doesn’t look very evening-sunish, but do you like it anyway? Or not?
There were two doors metal doors that were open to the great outdoors as we walked around town, looking for interesting backgrounds. Heidi came up with the idea to stand in the doorway. I grimaced and massaged my forehead nervously. It looked kind of like there might be people inside and they might see us. That couldn’t be good in any case.
In a rare show of not caring what others thought, I decided to do something random and exciting in public completely against my personality. We shot in the doorway. It was nice. Heidi held the umbrella and lit ‘em up and we shot away. In the middle of shooting we noticed that there was a flock of ballerinas practicing in the background. They stared a little between their drills. So even though you can’t see it, there are 12-year old girls in tutus staring holes into the back of Shane and Dorc’s heads during this picture.

so you want a comment… first, nice! i like the 2nd, 3rd and last the best- the last is my favorite! love it! so glad you braved the public unknown for it:P the one you ask about opinions on…no, doesn’t look very evening-lightish, but i still like the lighting. dont’ quite like the pose tho.
Third from the last is my fav. It’s so precise, intelligent, with maybe a touch of uniformity. I dig the style!
#3 is just plain classy. I like it.
I like the 3rd one. Excellent stuff!
Could you have made the light look more “evening sun-ish” by adding gels to the flash to warm the backlighting up on the fourth picture?
i know i told you this before, but i really like the lighting on the 3rd from the top.
and again, i am glad you went ahead and tried a new pose on that 3rd to last. I really, really like it.
I like the backlighting on the 4th picture. It doesn’t look as warm as an evening sun does, but it still adds a lot to the picture. Clear, clean & just beautiful.
cheers!
yeah very nice, and by the way if you are so afraid of the public then why do you have a blog.
I agree with ^^^. The backlight is very nice. I’d like the picture 100% if Dorcas wouldn’t be facing the camera dead on. I think #s 2 and 3 are my favorites.
